Edwin R. Hartle

Edwin R. Hartle, 78 of Devils Lake formerly of rural Warwick ND passed away at his home on Thursday, May 7, 2020.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake ND beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial for Edwin will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass.  Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday with Reverend Paul Schuster, Pastor of St. Michael’s Catholic Church officiating. There will be a gathering at Edwin’s home following the graveside services. 

Edwin Raymond Hartle was born on May 27, 1941 on a small farm west of Devils Lake ND, the son of Mike J. and Margaret (Bickler) Hartle. Edwin grew up on the family farm outside of Warwick ND. 

Edwin’s first love was that of a rodeo rider, but circumstances made him a farmer. He always helped on the family farm and also worked for various neighbor farmers in his younger years.  He and his brother, Louis eventually became the Hartle Brothers partnership and farmed together for many years.  Edwin also worked in the auction barn at Lake Region Livestock.

In the fall of 2018, Edwin and his brother Louis reluctantly retired, moved off the family farm and into Devils Lake. On any given day, Ed could be found at the local café or the Spirit Lake Buffet and taking in a bit of gaming. 

Edwin will be greatly missed by his beloved family, dear friends and neighbors and the Warwick community.

Edwin is survived by his brothers Louis Hartle, Devils Lake and James Hartle, Seattle WA; sisters Isabel Liska, West Fargo ND and Aggie (Tim) Hennessy, Anderson SC and 3 nieces, 2 nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Jerry Liska.
