Elizabeth M. “Betty” Kalhagen, 92 of Devils Lake formerly of the Webster/Edmore ND area passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.

Visitation for Betty will be on Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake ND from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Reuben Schnaidt officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lawton, ND in the spring.

Elizabeth Mae Roberts was born on April 8, 1929, the daughter of Dorothy (Rosenthal) and Clarence Roberts of Eckman, ND. Her mother passed away eight days after her birth and then shortly after she became a foster daughter of Mary (Joern) and Ernest Gessner of Russell, ND, both mothers were second cousins. She attended school in Russell for ten years and then moved to Kramer, ND with her parents and graduated from Kramer High School in 1947.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church of rural Upham, ND. She was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, working in Bottineau, Bismarck and Fargo, ND.

Betty met and married her husband Carl Arthur Kalhagen after World War II as he was a student and veteran in Fargo. They were married October 1, 1955, and lived and farmed in the Webster/Edmore area all their married life.  Carl Arthur passed away September 19, 1993. They had moved to Devils Lake a short time before his death.

Elizabeth was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church of Edmore and an associate member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church of Devils Lake. Elizabeth was a homemaker and spent a great deal of her time doing volunteer work for the school, church, and community. Elizabeth trusted in her Lord and Savior and His promises. She was a faithful prayer warrior, praying for others and their needs and served on the Prayer Chain Committee at St. Olaf. 

Elizabeth is survived by her children: Orin (Tamela) Kalhagen of Forest Lake, MN, Sonja Kalhagen of Devils Lake, ND, Gerald (Bertha) Kalhagen of Webster, ND, and Karen (David) Lamphier of Shoreview, MN; grandchildren Seth (Melissa), Joshua (Anna), Noah (Ashley) Kalhagen, Kari (Tim) Song, Candra, Leandre, and Keenan Kalhagen; great grandchildren Avery, Piper, Ezra, Hazel, Elliot, Elise, and Emmett Kalhagen; half-sisters Peggy VanHorn, Minot, ND, Joann Teigan, Wahoo, NE, Bonnie (Larry) Job, Everest, KS, Sandra (Virgil) Gilseth, Kenmare, ND; half-brothers James (Janet) Roberts, Troy, KS and Terence (Sue) Roberts also of Minot; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, foster parents, sisters Doris Louise Roberts, Della Smith, niece Lois Brekke, stepmother, Josephine (Hamel) Roberts, foster sisters Margaret Krueger, Leona Thiel, Bernice Kitzman, Marie Krenz, Edith Gessner, and half-sister Clarice Rosenthal.

Casket Bearers will be Seth Kalhagen, Joshua Kalhagen, Noah Kalhagen, Kari Song, Candra Kalhagen, Leandre Kalhagen, and Keenan Kalhagen.
