Emma T. Laturnus, 94 of Detroit Lakes, MN formerly of Cando, ND passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Ecumen Care Center in Detroit Lakes in the loving care of her family and Hospice.
Mass of Christian Burial for Emma will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando, ND with the Reverend Daniel Musgrave celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday, November 9th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Emma Theresa Rombs was born on December 13, 1923 to Angelica (Frank) and Joseph Rombs at Rugby, ND. She was the youngest of 8 children. She was raised on the family farm in Noonan Township and she attended Noonan School.
Emma married Paul Laturnus on November 18, 1947. They farmed in the Starkweather, ND and Cando, ND communities. To this union, ten children were born. Paul passed away in 1968. Emma moved from the family farm near Considine, ND to Cando where she worked at the Towner County Memorial Hospital, Rest Haven Manor Nursing Home and Palmer Clinic. In 1998, Emma moved to West Fargo, ND and later to Casselton, ND to be a loving nanny for her grandchildren. In her retirement, Emma lived in West Fargo, ND and Dilworth, MN.
Emma treasured spending time with her children and grandchildren. She especially loved reading, gardening, cooking and baking. Emma enjoyed spending time at the lake. She was always up for watching movies, playing board games, and Bingo. Grandma Emma was an avid Aggravation player and challenged anyone to beat her and her lucky green marbles! Emma loved her Polka music and every Sunday if you showed up during “Polka Hour” you had to dance the Polka with Emma.
Emma will be greatly missed by her children. Dorothy (Aldon) Anderson, Devils Lake; Don (Denny Hasko) Laturnus, San Miguel, Mexico; Gerald (Sheila) Laturnus, Cando; Paulette (Bruce) Moenkedick, New York Mills, MN; Robert Laturnus, Windsor, CO; William Laturnus, Jamestown, ND; JoAnn (Dewane) Heisler, West Fargo, ND; and Sandra (Kent) Leith, McKinney, TX.
Twenty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren will miss her. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Shanda (Wayde) Anderson and their children Jaydan, Huntyrr and Teegyn, Brock Anderson; Kristen (Aaron) Crowe and their daughter Emma, Jaclyn (Kyle) Roos and their children Charlee and Layla; Paul (Alicia) Laturnus and their children Mason and Carver, Sara (Steve) Buresh and their children Andrew, Alana and Allie, Jill (Cole) Boehmer; Emily Laturnus; Richard (Betsy) Moenkedick and their children Nick and Sammie, Adam (Krista) Moenkedick, Brian (Julie) Moenkedick and their son Henry; Reid Laturnus, Mia Laturnus, Estee Laturnus, and Avril Laturnus; Ryan (Rachel) Heisler, Shawn Heisler and Taylor Heisler; Lindsey Leith and Logan Leith.
Surviving brothers and sisters-in-law: Anna Schiele, Donna Mae Laturnus, Pete (Donna Lou) Laturnus, Martin (Helen) Laturnus, Wendy Laturnus, Edward (Bonnie) Laturnus, Betty Schiele and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Emma was met by her heavenly family. Husband: Paul; daughters: Jeanette Laturnus, Joyce Nicholas; parents: Joseph and Angelica Rombs; brothers: Anton Rombs, George Rombs, John Rombs and infant Wendlin Rombs; sisters: Magdalena (Paul) Leiphon, Mary (Wendell) Volk, infant Theresa Rombs; niece: Carolyn Galloway and many in-laws and cousins.
Casket Bearers will be Emma's Grandsons Paul Laturnus, Richard Moenkedick, Brock Anderson, Adam Moenkedick, Brian Moenkedick, Ryan Heisler, Shawn Heisler and Logan Leith. Honorary Bearers are Reid, Mia, Estee and Avril Laturnus. Reading the Scriptures will be Emma's Granddaughters Kristen Crowe, Jaclyn Roos. Gift Bearers will be Emma's Granddaughters Shanda Anderson, Sara Buresh, Lindsey Leith and Taylor Heisler. Music will be provided by Emma's Granddaughters Jill Boehmer and Emily Laturnus accompanied by Betsy Moenkedick, Sacred Heart Choir. The Christian Mothers will provide an honor guard for Emma.
