Evelyn Kuntz Shipley Olsen

Evelyn Kuntz Shipley Olsen was born June 20, 1932 in Devils Lake ND, the daughter of Johanna (Burkhartsmeier) and Peter Kuntz.  They resided on a farm at Southam ND.  She did her schooling at Southam and then went to work for a farm couple for 2 years. 

In 1946, Evelyn went to work at the School for the Deaf for 6 years. She met and married George Shipley Jr. in January of 1952 and they resided on a farm north of Devils Lake until 1966.  They moved to Nevis, Minnesota and they resided there until 1969.  They moved back to Devils Lake where Evelyn and her 8 children made there home. 

After coming back to Devils Lake, Evelyn worked for Eileen’s Painting Service for a number of years, and part-time at A.B.C. Cleaners, Elks Lodge, Chuck’s Super Market and house cleaning for a number of people.  She retired from work because of back problems in 1977. 

She met and later married LeRoy Olsen on September 20, 1983.  He was the love of her life and step-father to her 8 children, 20 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. 

Mom was a great cook. She enjoyed spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren.  She enjoyed doing puzzles, watching game shows on TV, and playing cards.  She will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts. 

Evelyn’s loving family include her husband LeRoy; 8 children Veronica (Robert) Sailor, Pat (Mary) Shipley, Gordon (Shirley) Shipley, Micky Shipley, Kirk Shipley, George (Trudy) Shipley, Jackie (Tim) Lee and Dallas (Melissa) Shipley; brothers Mike Kuntz, Ray Kuntz and Jake (Helen) Kuntz; sisters Mary (Bill) Dahlen, Janet (Charles) Mertens and Theresa Kuntz; sisters-in-law Donna Olson, Karen (Ernie) Osowski and Eileen Railing and many nieces, nephews and their families. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johanna and Peter, brother Edward Kuntz, sister-in-law Mary Ann Kuntz and niece Michelle Link. 

Casket Bearers will be Evelyn’s grandsons Marty Shipley, Kirk Shipley Jr., Seth Shipley, Levi Shipley, Chris Loehr and Erik Shipley. Honorary Bearers are all of Evelyn’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Lector will be George Shipley and Eucharistic Gift Bearers are Evelyn’s granddaughters Tonya Sailor, Teri DeMarais and Tina Haugen.  Special Tribute will be by Wyatt Hoyt, Evelyn’s great grandson.  Music will be provided by Lynne Webster and Audrey Myklebust.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. led by Reverend Mr. Ken Severinson, Deacon.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Reverend Steven Wirth celebrating the Mass.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
