Fern Gladys Dammen

Fern G. Dammen, 66 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.

Fern Gladys Dammen was born on April 26, 1957, to Orville and Mary (Bercier) Dammen in Rolla, North Dakota. At the age of 4, the family moved to Devils Lake where a very caring neighbor told Fern’s parents about a special-education program starting and Fern was enrolled. In 1976, Fern was allowed to graduate from Devils Lake Central High School.

In her younger years, Fern worked as a maid at the Topper Motel and the Fireside Inn. In 1998 she was awarded the Employee of the Year from the Mayor’s Counsel on the Employment of People with Disabilities.

Fern lived for 9 years at Prairie Heights. During the last years of her life, Fern lived at Lake Country Manor where she enjoyed playing Bingo. She spent her time going for walks, doing word search puzzles and embroidery. She knitted many scarves that she gave to family as gifts. She also made many latch hook projects.

She was known for her meticulous housekeeping abilities and cooking skills. This was due to Fern’s bond with her Mom-they were always together. If Mom was cooking, Fern was cooking; if Mom was doing laundry, Fern was doing laundry; if Mom was cleaning, Fern was cleaning; if Mom was angry at Dad, Fern was angry at Dad. Fern was never the same after her Mom passed away.

Fern had a unique wit and sense of humor. She kept our family laughing many times. We will miss her.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving family. Her sisters Mavis Mertens of Portland, Texas and Lynette Hinds of Victoria, Texas, and brother Jeff Dammen of Devils Lake; nieces Jenny, Katie, Jessica, Kayci, Shannon and nephews Jacob and Austin; four great nieces and three great nephews; one great great niece and three great great nephews.

Services for Fern will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake with burial to follow in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Her ashes will be buried with her Mom.
