Fredrick W. ‘Freddie’ Wilson, a life-long resident of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018 at his home.  

Fred was born to Fred and Wilma (Webster) Wilson on December 10, 1934 in Devils Lake, ND. He attended Devils Lake public schools graduating from Central High School in 1952.  He continued his education at Jamestown College where he received a business degree.  In 1956 he volunteered for the Draft and served in the Army until honorably discharged in 1958.  He then worked for an insurance agency and the Webster Bank before starting at the Devils Lake Post Office in 1965 and continued employment there until his retirement in 1992.

Fred joined the Elk’s Band in 1960 playing the trumpet until several years ago at which time he continued his love of music by joining the Senior Center Band. He was a patriotic man active with the VFW and played Taps at over 500 military funerals and ceremonies before his death.  Fred was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where he volunteered for many years as well.

He is survived by step-brother, George Ackre, Jr. and numerous cousins and other relatives.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Wilma Wilson Ackre; an infant sister, Lois Ann; and step-father, George Ackre, Sr.

Gathering of family and friends will be on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 3 until 5 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake and will continue on Monday at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Funeral Services for Fred will be held on Monday, Aug. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Trudy Dumont officiating. Music will be provided by the Senior Center Band, Debbie Dyste, Jean Aardahl, Patty Cote, and Dennis Aardahl.  

Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post No. 756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.

The family requests memorials in Fred’s name be directed to the VFW TAPS/Honor Guard Program, 314 3rd Ave NE, Devils Lake, ND 58301; the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 501 5th St NE, Devils Lake, ND  58301; or to a charitable organization of your choice.
