Gilbert D. Haus, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, at the age of 80. Born in Calio, North Dakota, to Bert and Clara (Scheder) Haus, Gil lived a life full of love, adventure, and dedication to his family and community.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Claraine (Candy) Haus; his children, Gary (Michelle) Haus and Amy (Mark) Goldman; as well as his cherished grandchildren, Benjamin, August, Nathan, Easton, and Ayla. He was preceded in death by his sister, Eileen (James) Fiedler, and brother, James Jean) Haus, and is survived by his eldest brother, Eugene “Jockey” (Cathy) Haus as well and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gilbert served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966 proudly aboard the USS Charles H. Roan, where he honed his skills as a fire control technician. This experience sparked a lifelong passion for electronics, leading him to pursue a successful career as an electrical engineer and eventually start his own business in security electronics on the East Coast.
In 1999, Gil and Candy returned to North Dakota, where they enjoyed raising cattle for a decade and reconnecting with old friends while making new ones in their community. A passionate hunter in his youth, Gil was known for his willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need, particularly in the Starkweather community. He had a zest for life, enjoying travel with his wife and engaging in conversations with strangers wherever they went.
A celebration of Gilbert's life will be held at Assumption Catholic Church in Starkweather on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be held an hour prior to mass. All are welcome to join the family for a gathering after mass filled with lunch, reminiscing, and honoring his memory. Areangements are through Gilbertson Funeral Home in Devil’s Lake.
