Gordon S. Braathen, 90 of Devils Lake formerly of Starkweather, ND passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks with loving family at his side.

There will be visitation at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Tuesday, August 20th, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a time of prayer and remembrance at 7:00 p.m. with Reverend Robert Buechler officiating.

Funeral Services for Gordon will be on Wednesday, August 21st at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Lori Pankratz officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.

Gordon Sigmund Braathen, the son of Hans and Signe (Kvikstad) Braathen, was born June 27, 1934, on a farm near Starkweather. He attended Starkweather School and graduated from High School there.

Gordon married Marilyn Oyos on July 25, 1953, in Starkweather, ND. They lived and farmed near Starkweather until 1988 when they moved to Devils Lake. Gordon and Marilyn continued to do custom harvesting from Oklahoma to ND until retiring in 2002 after 32 years. Gordon also drove school bus for 20 years, did snow removal in Starkweather, and helped with numerous projects and activities in Starkweather. He also never passed up the opportunity to help with lutefisk and meatball suppers.

Gordon is survived by daughter Marcia (Walt) Torning of Westfield, Indiana; sons Gordy (Linda) Braathen and Kent Braathen both of Grand Forks, ND; twelve grandchildren Christopher, Eric (Yvette) and Nick (Alyssa) O’Brien. Maria (Tyler) Baer, Nils (Jenny) Torning, Martha (Drew) Stuart. Tyler (Jenny), Robbie (Jessica), Levi, Jesse (Carly), Jordan (Savanna), and Jace Braathen; 22 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 9 step great grandchildren; sister Clara Lee, Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Connie Oyos, Fergus Falls, MN; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Faye and Tom Wemerskirchen, Park Rapids, MN; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Keith and Barb Oyos, Minneapolis, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Gordon was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, daughter and son-in-law Debra and Steve Nies, daughter-in-law Sandy; and parents Hans and Signe.
