Gordon R. Cowan, 77 of Devils Lake formerly of Churchs Ferry, ND passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018 at his home in the loving care of his family and Altru Hospice. Gordon R. Cowan was born on March 3, 1941 at Cando, ND, the son of Roy M. and Grace I. (Hillerman) Cowan. He was reared and educated in the Churchs Ferry area, graduating from Churchs Ferry High School in the class of 1959.  Gordon earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from NDSU, Fargo in 1968.  He farmed in the Churchs Ferry area most of his life, moving to Devils Lake in 2001. Gordon was united in marriage to Yvonne Tofsrud on June 10, 1983 in Devils Lake.  They established their home in Churchs Ferry on the farm.  Yvonne died on August 22, 2004.  Gordon was very active in the Churchs Ferry community, serving as the Chain Lakes Township Supervisor, Director of the Churchs Ferry Fire Department and Men’s Club. He also served as a Director of the Ramsey County Water Resource Board and the Ramsey County Rural Utilities.  Gordon was a member of the Churchs Ferry Masonic Lodge for 53 years and the Shrine KEM Temple for 50 years and also the Langdon Scottish Rite.   He was a life member of the Devils Lake Elks Lodge 1216 and a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Devils Lake.  Gordon is survived by his step-daughters Ranae Browning, North Pole, Alaska, Debra (Reverend Robert) Buechler, Starkweather, ND and Theresa Owlboy, Devils Lake, ND; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren Peter Owlboy Jr. and his children Vera, Brayden and Camden, Sarah Owlboy and her children Star and Dominic, Jared Owlboy, Traci Owlboy and her children Kylen and Ariya, Isaac Owlboy, Sydni Owlboy and Samuel Bull, George Browning III, Britni Browning and Rachael Buechler; brother Roger (Susie) Cowan, Sacramento, CA; nephews Tom, Curtis, Neal, Paul, Ronald and Michael Gilberg and Roydean Cowan and niece Brandy Cowan and several great nieces and great nephews. Gordon was met in Heaven by his parents; wife Yvonne; grandson Benjamin Andrew Buechler and sister Carol Gilberg. Funeral Services for Gordon will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Lori Broschat officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.  Masonic Rites will be held at the graveside.  Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Sunday, July 29th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a time of prayer and remembrance at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.  `
