Gordon R. "Bumpy" Schmid

Gordon “Bumpy” Schmid, 87 of Minnewaukan, ND passed away Sunday morning, July 16, 2017 at Eventide Heartland Care Center surrounded by his family. Gordon Ray “Bumpy” Schmid was born on November 30, 1929 to Paul and Emma (Kanzelman) Schmid on the farm South of Minnewaukan, ND. Bumpy graduated from Minnewaukan High School in 1948 and started farming with his Dad. He married Ardys Christensen on June 8, 1952 and were the parents of 2 sons, Gordon “Gordy” and Rodger. Bumpy was a trustee and elder of the Minnewaukan Presbyterian Church and served as Treasurer for West Bay Township for over 25 years. He also was on the Board of the Farmers Union Oil Company of Oberon and the Minnewaukan Cemetery Association.  After he semi-retired from farming in 2008 he enjoyed helping Gordy and his grandson Anthony on the farm. He helped with the harvest of 2016 and was looking forward to harvest time this fall. He loved animals, farming, hunting and ice fishing.  He is survived by his two sons Gordy Schmid and his wife Paula of Devils Lake and Rodger Schmid of Fargo, ND; grandchildren Anthony and Alyssa Schmid; 3 step grandchildren Laurie (Robert) Henry, Jennifer (Layton) White and Steven Daniels; 7 step great grandchildren; sister Lucille Westby, Maddock; sisters-in-law Annie Schmid, Devils Lake and Gwen Christensen, Chandler, AZ; brother-in-law Dean Christensen, Dickinson, ND; special friends Sherri and Randy Thompson family of Minnewaukan; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 62 years Ardys; brothers Donald and George Schmid; brothers-in-law Clifford Westby, Gary Christensen and Buell Christensen; sister-in-law Katherine Schmid. Funeral Services for Bumpy will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan with Reverend Tom Westcott officiating. Burial will be in the Minnewaukan Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 19th from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.  Urn Bearers will be Anthony and Alyssa Schmid. Bumpy is in the care of the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake.
