Harold John, son of Mathias and Catherine (Zimmer) Berg was born on May 26, 1923 at Clyde, ND. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Clyde.  Being from a family of 13 children, everyone pitched in to help with the chores, helping care for the younger siblings, doing whatever was needed.

Harold proudly served his country in the United States Navy, during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Valeria. He was honorably discharged as a Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class on June 17, 1946.

Harold was united in marriage to Dolores Bernardy on November 19, 1946 at Munich, ND. They would live, farm and raise their children in the Calio-Munich area for most of their life.  Besides giving his all to farming, Harold was never idle.  He drove School Bus for the Munich School and worked at the Ford Garage in Cando.  In 1990, they moved to Devils Lake.  Dolores died on February 11, 2005.

Harold definitely knew about hard work, but when able he enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting pool and darts and never wanted to miss a good game of cards with family and friends. His greatest enjoyment was playing with his grandkids.  His skills in wood and metal work brought him and the recipients of those works much joy.  He made small roll top desks for each of his grandkids and also go-carts and jewelry boxes. He was very proud to have worked with Father Haas on many wood projects including a large table for the Bishop of the Fargo Diocese.

Harold was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Munich and St. Joseph in Devils Lake and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed membership in the VFW in Egeland.

Harold was a devoted husband, Dad and Grandpa. He served his country with honor and his strong faith kept him steadfast in all the ups and downs of life.

Harold leaves behind his loving family. His children Owen Berg and his wife Helen of Langdon, ND and Anita Pitchford and her husband David of Colorado Springs, CO; grandkids Stephanie (Keith) Mikkelsen, Casey Berg and Sarah (Jason) Schill and Kaitlyn Pitchford and Kelly Pitchford; great grandkids Hannah and Kyle Mikkelsen, Allie Berg, Cayden, Brennan and Addison Schill; brother Richard (Rosalie) Berg, Devils Lake and brother-in-law Ralph Nosbusch, Bismarck, ND; many nieces and nephews.
