Herman D. Schwab, 85 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Thursday morning, April 13, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Care Center, Devils Lake, ND in the loving care of his family. Herman Duane Schwab, son of Sebastian and Eva Marie (Stach) Schwab was born on Monday, April 4, 1932 at Leeds, ND. The family lived in Leeds until 1936 then moved to Devils Lake where Herm was reared and educated. He attended St. Mary’s High School, graduating with the class of “1950”. He then went to work at Shark’s Men’s Store in Devils Lake and then at Rosenberg’s Chevrolet in Langdon. In January of 1951, Herman entered the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in December of 1954 with the rank of Engineman 2nd Class. Herm returned to Devils Lake and was united in marriage to Joyce Marie Walden on July 21, 1956 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They made their home in Devils Lake, then moved to Grand Forks for a year and then Langdon for two years. In 1960 they returned to Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their family. For the next 37 years, Herm would be co-owner and operator of Universal Parts Company with partners George Hiltner, Frank Hiltner and Danny Hoffart. They had stores in Devils Lake and Langdon. Herm retired from Universal Parts in 1997 but continued active in J & H Rental Properties with his wife Joyce for many years. Joyce died on March 16, 2006. Herm has been a resident at the Good Samaritan Center since April of 2012. Herm worked hard to support his family but when he was able to take off from work, he loved a good game of cards and conversation. It was always fun and games when at the cabin at Woodlake. He and Joyce had their dream home at Creel Bay until the flood waters overtook their home. So many wonderful memories of time with family and friends. Sharing so many Sunday meals together at “Mom and Dad’s” house. The house was always full of family, friends, card players and fun times together. Herm was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, serving as a Grand Knight. He also enjoyed membership in the Elks and Eagles Lodges, the VFW and American Legion. Herman was a devoted husband, dad and grandpa and beloved brother and uncle. He counted family and dear friends as one of his greatest blessings. Rest in God’s peace, Herm. He is survived by his loving family. His children Mark Schwab and his wife Patty, Lori Schwab, Greg Schwab and his wife Kaye and Scot Schwab all of Devils Lake and Dirk Schwab of Brocket, ND; son-in-law Duke Winnegge; eleven grandchildren Heather (Duane) Brandvold and Travis (Charlene) Schwab-Jason Schwab and April Rude-Scott (Nicole) Schwab, Timber (Amber) Schwab and Heidi (Jon) Becker-Sadie Voulgarakis, Amber Carlson, Andrew Schwab and Breanna Rieger; fifteen great grandchildren Kaden, Alex, Carter, Camden, Caleb, Bailey, Camron, Taylor, Kayleigh, Aubrey, Sydney, Owen, Isaac, Colton and Zander; siblings Marvin (Delores) Schwab, Dennis (Judy) Schwab and Richard Schwab all of Devils Lake and Kathryn “Jeanne” Scoggin, Rock Hills, South Carolina; sisters-in-law Del Johnson, Fort Dodge, Iowa, Faye Beaudoin, League City, TX, Gail Ritteman, Lakota, ND and Grace Sateran, McVille, ND; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joyce; daughter Traci; brother and sister-in-law Allan and Yvonne Schwab; father-in-law and mother-in-law Olvin and Inga Walden; nephew Galen Sateran; brothers-in-law Lee Johnson, Ed Ritteman and Burton Sateran. Casket Bearers for Herman will be Travis Schwab, Jason Schwab, Scott Schwab, Timber Schwab, Andrew Schwab, Duane Brandvold and Jon Becker. Gift Bearers will be Heather Brandvold, April Rude, Heidi Becker, Sadie Voulgarakis, Amber Carlson and Breanna Rieger. Reading the Scriptures will be Dennis Schwab. Mass of Christian Burial for Herm will be on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756 and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team-Navy. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 18th at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and then at St. Joseph Catholic Church from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Rosary and Scripture Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday with the Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus and Honor Guard by the 4th Degree Knights. The Scripture Service will be led by Reverend Mr. Ken Severinson, Deacon.
