Ihlys Peterson

Ihlys Peterson, 84, of Devils Lake ND, formerly of Warwick, ND passed away on Monday, October 14,2024 in Mesquite, NV.

Ihlys was born on November 26, 1939, in Warwick ND, the daughter of Evin and Karen (Christianson) Peterson. Ihlys graduated from Warwick High School in 1958. She was proud to be a Warwick Warrior. She excelled at basketball and was most known for her left-handed hook shot.

 Ihlys began working shortly after graduation at Leevers Foods. She worked there until 1984. She then worked at Nordic Fiberglass until she retired in 2017.

Together with her mother Karen, she raised two children, Kendall, and Tanya. Ihlys was a kind and loving mother. She enjoyed watching them participate in sports and other activities and continued to be their #1 fan each and every day. After Karen had a stroke in 1995, Ihlys cared for her mother and best friend until she passed away in 2002. Ihlys was also a grandmother (Grandma I), an Aunt (Auntie I) and a good friend.

Ihlys enjoyed reading, country western music, bowling, playing cards, cheering on the Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs, Timberwolves, and Golden State Warriors. Her favorite pastime was playing Bingo, especially with family and friends at the table. Ihlys had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed life to its fullest. She was always an optimist. Despite a cancer diagnosis in 2017, she was strong and full of hope throughout her journey. She lived with an attitude of gratitude and appreciation for her many blessings.

In 2020, Ihlys went to live in Elko, NV with Tanya, and her husband Matt. During this time, Ihlys made new friends. She enjoyed the warmer climate but kept up with the North Dakota news and weather by reading the Grand Forks Herald while enjoying her morning coffee. In the fall of 2023, together with Matt and Tanya she became a snowbird and wintered in Mesquite, NV.

She is survived by Kendall (Julie) Peterson of Devils Lake ND; their children, Misty Klindt of Sidney MT, Mindy (Shane ) Cavanaugh of Devils Lake ND, Kendall Peterson Jr. (Sara) of West Fargo ND, Kayla (Mike) Kearney of Moorhead MN, Sadie (Ben) Alter of West Fargo ND, and their families; Tanya (Matt) Griego of Mesquite NV, Matt’s children Samantha (Will) Cole and family, of Temecula CA, Ben Griego of Wilmington NC; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; Thelma Eggleston, Muriel Wessels, Norma Sherve, and Donna Schuh and two brothers; Leonard and Dennis Peterson.

Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, October 26, at Warwick Lutheran Church. Pastor Bethany Wurtz will officiate, and the burial will be at the Warwick Cemetery.
