Janice “Jan” Shelver, 85 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Friday, February 14, 2020 at Eventide Devils Lake Care Center.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Eventide Devils Lake Care Center (Good Samaritan Center) for Janice. All are welcome to attend.
Janice Ann Shelver was born to John and Leila (Pilversack) Starkey on February 15, 1934 at Miltona, Minnesota. She moved to Parkers Prairie, MN with her parents and sister Jeri in 1944. She was confirmed at 1st Lutheran Church in 1948. She graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1952.
Janice attended Moorhead State University working on her teaching certificate. Her first teaching position was at Werner, ND where she met Matt Gerhart also a teacher at that school. Janice and Matt married in 1954 at Halliday, ND. They lived at Halliday and taught in the area for 10 years before moving to Grand Forks, ND to attend UND College. They then moved to Jamestown, ND where Janice worked at Farmers Union Insurance Co. She was able to travel to Japan during that time on business for Farmers Union which was memorable for her.
Janice married Ted Shelver and moved to Devils Lake. She was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and enjoyed singing in the choir at her church. Jan was involved in several Lake Region community activities and events through the years, volunteering her time and talent where ever needed.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Leila Starkey and husbands Matt Gerhart and Ted Shelver.
Janice survived by her sister and brother-in-law Jeri and Ken Magnuson and nephews Steve (Cindy) Magnuson, Terry (Barb) Magnuson and Scott (Carol) Magnuson.
There will be a friends and family gathering in memory of Jan at Parkers Prairie, MN this summer.
