Aletha Jeanette Calderwood, 84 of Devils Lake formerly of Crary, ND passed away on Saturday evening, August 11, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Aletha Jeanette Bertsch was born on January 15, 1934 at Devils Lake, ND, the daughter of Adam and
Arleen (Hall) Bertsch. Jeanette’s Dad passed away the winter of 1935 so Jeanette and her mother resided in Devils Lake until the fall of 1935 when they moved to Russell, ND to live with Grandpa and Grandma Hall. The summer of 1936, Arleen and Jeanette moved to Crary, ND and Arleen married William “Bill” Morgan on November 25, 1936.
Jeanette attended grades 1 through 10 at Southam, ND and transferred to Lakota High School for her Junior and Senior years, graduating in 1951. After high school, she attended Valley City State College for one year, getting her teaching certificate. She taught one year at a school South of Crary before she was united in marriage to Donald E. Calderwood on June 28, 1953 at the Crary Congregational Church.
After marriage, Jeanette became a dedicated farm wife and loving mother to 4 children. Jeanette worked side by side with her husband and family. She cooked for the many hired hands that would come and go through the years. She tended her garden from planting, to harvest and all that was involved in that process. As a hard working farm wife, Jeanette was very involved in the Agri Women of North Dakota and was awarded Agri Woman of the Year.
Jeanette was so proud to see the Calderwood Homestead into the hands of a 4th generation of Calderwoods. It gave her such joy to be a part of all the activities of the farm and the many hours spent traveling to watch their grandchildren participate in their other activities.
Jeanette was a very active member of the Crary Congregational Church until it closed and the family joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in Devils Lake. She also enjoyed membership in the Rebekahs. Jeanette and Don also found great pleasure and comradery as members of the Prairie Partners Square Dance Club. They had been members since 1965 and danced their way throughout the Midwest and even into Canada.
Jeanette was a woman of faith, a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. We shall miss you each day, dear Mother, but will strive to be just as hard-working, as loving, kind and gentle as you were in your lifetime.
Jeanette’s loving family include her children and their spouses David and June Calderwood, Casselton, ND, Ralph Calderwood, Lee and Dianne Calderwood all of Crary, Marie and Steve Jacobson, Devils Lake; grandchildren Matthew Calderwood, Vancouver, BC, Nichole (Scott) Sommers, Bismarck; Tyler Calderwood, Devils Lake, Brooke Calderwood, Devils Lake, Leanne (Pat) Tronson, Doyon, ND, Shasta (Mike) Held, Mandan; Grand Jacobson, Fargo; six great grandchildren Hartley, Harper, Lindsey, April, Zander and Adley; sisters Doris (Harold) Anderson, Bagley, MN, Mercedes (Wayne) Barnard, Canton, Ohio and Wilma Girodat, Devils Lake and many nieces and nephews.
