Jewel M. Anderson, 84 of Devils Lake formerly of Leeds ND passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022 at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital.

Visitation will be at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday, February 3, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a time of prayer and remembrance at 7:00 p.m.  Funeral Services for Jewel will be on Friday, February 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the Leeds Lutheran Church with Reverend Connie Monson officiating.  Jewel will be laid to rest in the Leeds Cemetery at a later date.

Jewel Markeeta Mavis was born on January 10, 1938 at York ND, the daughter of Everett “Delos” and Lorraine (Follman) Mavis.  She grew up on the family farm, attended a country school for her elementary education, graduating with honors from Leeds High School with the class of 1956.  She worked in the York area for several years at a variety of jobs.

Jewel was united in marriage to Richard Anderson on December 28, 1959 at Churchs Ferry.  They established their home in Leeds where they lived, worked and raised their family.  Jewel spent most of her adult working life employed at the Leeds Café and for over 15 years was a cook at the Leeds Public School.  For the past 10 years, Jewel and Richard have called Devils Lake home to be closer to family.

Jewel’s talents were many. She was an excellent seamstress and quilter; she could sew anything, she did alterations for everyone and anyone who needed her talent.  She was an awesome cook, which the students at Leeds were privileged to enjoy and her family also were the beneficiaries of many, many delicious feasts which frequently included Klub and lefse.  She was an active member of the Leeds Lutheran Church, the WELCA and the quilters.  She also enjoyed membership in the Eagles Club.

Jewel was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. They were her earthly treasures, her pride and joy.

Jewel’s loving family include her husband Richard of 62 years; children Ricky Anderson, Devils Lake, Pam (Lyle) Leibfried Devils Lake, Wesley (Tammy) Anderson, Warroad MN and Randy (Annette) Anderson, Aransas Pass, TX; many precious grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother Gary Mavis, Redwood City, California; sisters Sandy (Ted) Nelson, Freemont CA and Marvel L. Mavis of Los Gatos CA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Victor Anderson, Leeds ND, Luella Follman, also of Leeds and Arlene (Walt) Steen, Marysville WA; many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Delos and Lorraine Mavis, grandson Levi Leibfried, sister Karen Loghry of Casper, WY and in-laws Art and Ella Anderson.
