Julius V. Rainbow Jr., “Owasin Kodaypi” (Everyone’s Friend), 56 of Grand Forks formerly of the Spirit Lake Nation ND began his journey to the Spirit World on Saturday, August 15, 2020.
Julius was born on December 16, 1963 in Devils Lake ND, the son of Julius and Norma (Lambert) Rainbow Sr. Junior grew up on the Spirit Lake Nation, attending school at Oberon Public School and then high school at Fort Totten.
He worked for a time at Sioux Manufacturing, with the Head Start Program at CCCC and in Housekeeping and Food Service at the Spirit Lake Casino. In 2014, Junior moved to Grand Forks and made it home until his death. While living in Grand Forks, he worked at a variety of jobs.
Junior loved to play his BINGO and listen to his music. He loved going to pow-wows and being with family and friends, and making new friends as he traveled the pow-wow circuit.
Junior was a very generous, compassionate, loving and humble man. He thought the world of his family, especially his nieces and nephews.
Our precious brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, grandpa and dear friend will be so very missed by his loving family including his sisters Janice (Vincent) Cavanaugh, Martina (Mark) Robertson, Margaret "Peggy" Cavanaugh, Connie (Ronald McKay Sr.) Rainbow, Tammy (Richard) Littlewind all of the Fort Totten area, Bernadette (Daryle) Bergerud of South Dakota and Sharon Rainbow of Harvey ND; brothers Myron Lambert Sr. and Kurt Tenario; aunt Hermenia (Rainbow) McKay; uncle Vernon (Velma) Lambert; 27 nieces and nephews and many grandchildren and several great grandchildren and many cousins all who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Norma, grandparents Bernard and Carrie (White) Rainbow and Charles and Grace Lambert, sisters Cheryl GoodIron and Allura “Karen” Rainbow and brothers Richard Cavanaugh, Howard Cavanaugh, Rudy Cavanaugh, Bernard “Stormy” Rainbow and Victor Rainbow.
Pallbearers will be Shobie Shaw, Colby Cavanaugh, Jeremy Rainbow, Addison Lenoir, Tyler Rainbow, Mitchel Rainbow, Bernard Rainbow Jr., Samuel Cloud and Myron Lambert Sr.
Honorary Bearers will be Vincent Shaw, Ardis Shaw, Andrew Shaw, Jane Lambrois, Tina Martin, Dena Neckless, Rochelle Neckless, Flo Neckless, Blanche Lambert, Amy Longie, Ronald McKay Sr., Woody Longie, Russell Littleghost, Rory Littleghost, Fred Longie, Wiggs Anderson, Rena Anderson, Leola White-Thompson, Andrew Tratee, Miguel Rostavas and Emma Paulson of Grand Forks, Jesse Cavanaugh, Paul Cavanaugh, Calvin Thompson, Myra Pearson, Rosie Lenoir, Nellie Charboneau, Dorothy Lambert, Kristi Thompson, Cassandra Cloud and June Bear. As his name says "Everyone's Friend", if we missed anyone it was not intentional. Please forgive us as we do our best during this very sad time.
Visitation will be held at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten on Friday, August 21, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Friday from City Plaza, Devils Lake.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at the church on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. with burial in St. Jerome’s Cemetery, rural Crow Hill. COVID restrictions will be followed at all services.
