Kami Kay BirdHorse

Our sister, Kami Kay BirdHorse, left us for the Spirit World on August 20, 2023 at her sister Erica Philbrick-Shaw’s house. She was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota the 3rd sibling of the late Kermit BirdHorse and late Monica Owlboy (BirdHorse) Thompson on May 2, 1985. 
She began her earthly journey on May 2, 1985. She attended Four Winds Elementary School, graduated 8th grade from Pierre iNdian Learning Center in 1999 and graduated from Four Winds High School in 2003 and then attended Cankdeska Cikana Community College for a year. She participated in te NYS Program and worked for a time as a Blackjack dealer at the Spirit Lake Casino. 
Kami then met Jody Gaking in 2004 and they then became the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl in January 2006 and named her Kayonica Lee BirdHorse. Unfortunately due to a heart condition, she left this world at 5 months old. 
Kami then met Daylon White Sr, in August of 2006 and to this union they had a beautiful daughter named Kaylynn Karessa White who was born in June 2008 and then a handsome son named Daylon White Jr. in December 2009. 
Kami then met the love of her life in 2017, Joseph Kihne who treated her like a Queen. 
Kami enjoyed spending time with her 2 children who were her pride and joy. In her younger years she traveled to many pow-wows as a Traditional Dancer. She spent 3 years living in Sisseton, South Dakota with our Mom and siblings with stepdad Jimmy Philbrick and spent most of her time with younger sister Kelli at Grandpa Lawrence Philbrick’s home. Later moved back to St. Michael’s with her mother and siblings. Kami loved time with family and was always the “Bingo Caller” at family get-togethers. 
She enjoyed cruising around-jamming to music with friends-loved going to cook-outs-spending time with family. Whenever a family member or friend needed help-she was always there to help no matter what the situation was. No was never a word you would hear from her. 
Kami is survived by her daughter Kaylynn White; son Daylon White Jr.; father of her kids Daylon White Sr.; special friend Joseph Kihne AKA “The Babe”; sisters Erica (Alan Little) Philbrick-Shaw, Kelli BirdHorse and Danielle (Marcus Robertson) Owlboy; brothers Wesley BirdHorse Sr.; adopted son Alvin Whiteshield Sr.; nieces KayLynnzah BirdHorse, Shila Knutson, MarihLyn BirdHorse, KaLohni BirdHorse, Aliyah Whiteshield, Nicole Whiteshield and Kayonna Whiteshield; nephews Princeton (Samantha End of Horn) Philbrick-Ironroad, Merlyn Knutson, Kellen Knutson, SJ Knutson, Hansome BirdHorse, Wesley BirdHorse Jr., Weston BirdHorse, Alvin Whiteshield Jr., Jayden Cook, and Malik Longie; grandmothers Lillie Owlboy, Joyce Belgarde, Imogene Belgarde, Joanne Belgarde, Arlene Belgarde and Audrey Belgarde; grandfather Larry Belgarde; aunts Cheryl Belgarde, Bonnie Owlboy and Chepa Owlboy; uncles Francis Owlboy Jr., Lonnie Owlboy, Lorman Owlboy Sr., Peter Owlboy Sr., Philip BirdHorse Sr., Reno WhiteDress, Todd (Sheila) Belgarde, Leslie “Beaver” WhiteDress and Elton DuMarce; adopted sisters Jade Philbrick, Raeann Jerome and Jodee Touche; adopted brothers Alan Little, Lance Young and Gary Owlboy; godmother Lisa Owlboy;

The Wake for Kami will be on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at St. Michael's Recreation Center beginning at 3:30 p.m. with the procession to St. Michael to leave from the City Plaza, Devils Lake at 3:00 p.m. The prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. Funeral Services will be on Monday, August 28, 2023 beginning at 10:00 a.m. and then Kami will be taken to Wakpala, South Dakota for burial in the Long Hill Cemetery, rural Wakpala where her Dad, Kermit is interred.
