Lawrence “Larry” H. Larson, 86 a longtime Devils Lake businessman, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Eventide Heartland Care Center with his loving family at his side. Lawrence Homer Larson was born April 22, 1932 to John and Bessie (Bjornarra) Larson in Kloten, North Dakota. Lawrence attended school in Aneta, ND and graduated from Kloten High School. Lawrence was drafted into the United States Army on March 5, 1953 during the Korean War, serving his country until his honorable discharge on March 15, 1955 with the rank of Corporal. Lawrence then began working for PV Company in July 1955 at Kloten. On August 27 of that year, Lawrence was united in marriage to Delphine Olson at the Northwood Lutheran Church. They lived in Kloten, then transferred to Lakota. In 1956, Lawrence moved to Grace City to manage the PV Elevator. In 1960, Lawrence was transferred to Hendrum, Minnesota for the same position. In 1962, Lawrence and Delphine moved to East Grand Forks, MN and then in 1966 moved to Devils Lake, where they would call it home. Lawrence worked for PV Company for 28 years. In 1988, Lawrence purchased KZZY, then in 2001 purchased KDLR and KDVL which is now known as Radio Works. Lawrence was an avid fisherman, loved the outdoors, especially tending to his flowers and tomato plants. Lawrence was always up for a conversation and loved making his daily rounds around town, just to say hi and catch up on the latest. Lawrence had a smile that would lighten up the room, and was always there to lend a helping hand and words of encouragement. He was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1996. Lawrence’s dear surviving family include his loving wife of 63 years, Delphine; daughters Laurie Henschel, Bismarck, ND, Robin (Roger) Mertens, Devils Lake and Rhonda (Ross) Juntunen also of Bismarck; grandchildren Sarah (Nick) Murchie, Colorado, Danny (Robyn) Mertens, Nicole (Josh) Kuntz and Jordan (Allison Manley) Mertens all of Devils Lake; great grandchildren Easton Murchie, Ashtyn and Tralyn Mertens, Hayden and Halle Kuntz and Hollynn Mertens; sister Elsie Pederson of Fargo, ND along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Bessie. Funeral Services for Lawrence will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Lyle Belleque officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Gathering of family and friends will be at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Thursday, August 2nd from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and continue at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the funeral service.
