Lorraine Rose “Josie” McKay, 70 of Fort Totten, ND began her journey to the Spirit World on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 on Hospice Care at her home.
A Wake for Josie will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at the Crow Hill Wellness Center, rural Fort Totten beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to Crow Hill Wellness Center will leave on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. from City Plaza, Devils Lake.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Crow Hill Wellness Center with Reverend Steven Meyer and Reverend Paul Schuster officiating. Burial will be in the spring at St. Jerome’s Cemetery.
Lorraine Rose was born on January 12, 1955 at Fort Totten, North Dakota, the daughter of Jesse and Angeline (Brown) McKay. Josie was reared on the Spirit Lake Nation and graduated from Maddock, North Dakota.
Josie worked at dispatch, as a dental assistant, teacher assistant, Tribal Enrollment office, then security at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort. She also sat on the Tribal School Board for 10 plus years until health problems forced her to retire.
Josie loved spending time at the Spirit Lake Casino playing slot machines and BINGO. She so enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and visiting with all her family and friends.
Josie is survived by her loving family: her children Roger Yankton Jr., Ryan Yankton Sr., and Remi Yankton; grandchildren Taniesha, Kiara, Lander, Jonathan, Mallory, Roger III, Karsen, Ryan, Kasen, Shyla, Labron, Caliyah, Tyonna, Terran, Terissa, Daellionna and Drevyn; great grandchildren, Kyren, Kemper, Kensley, Paisley, Lillijo, Jonathan Jr., Minsu, Camden and Caius; sisters Ramona (John) Chaske, Deanna McKay, Rosita McKay, Donna Youngman, Marilyn Thompson, Sherry Thompson and Cindy Thompson; brothers Ronald (Connie) McKay Sr., Corbett McKay, Roger McKay, Murray (Donna) McKay and Calvin Thompson; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
She was reunited in the Spirit World with her parents Jesse and Angeline, daughter Leslie Rain Yankton, brothers Jerome “Sonny” McKay, Patrick McKay, Rodney “Cowboy” McKay, Jesse McKay Jr., and Robert “Sox” McKay, sister Barbara “Granny” McKay, nephew John Chaske Jr., niece Melissa Chaske.
Active Pallbearers: Ryan Yankton Jr., Shelton Yankton, Jonathan Yankton, Kasen Yankton, Myron Greybear Jr., Brant Yankton, Joran McKay, and Jesse J. McKay.
Honorary Bearers: Barbara Robertson, Debbie Little, Millie McKay, Todd Belgarde, Catalina Herman, Alfreda Charboneau, Cathy, Caroline, Patty, and Becky TwoHearts. A Special Thank You to Dr. Jackie, Downs, Altru Hospice Team for providing comfort care and service for Josie and to the Spirit Lake Ambulance Crew.
