Louis Anthony Chaske was born on July 9, 1950, and began his journey to Spirit World on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at the age of 74 years.
Louis was born at the Fort Totten Hospital, the son of Anthony and Rita (Mathion) Chaske. He attended Little Flower School at St. Michael, Wahpeton Boarding School, and the Flandreau School in South Dakota.
Louis joined the United States Army on July 16, 1971, and proudly and honorably served his country. His main assignment was a unit and supply specialist. He spent over a year in Korea. He was discharged from active duty on April 17, 1974, and continued with the reserves until July of 1977. He was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Marksman Badge. He was discharged with the rank of PFC.
As a young man he would ride the rodeo circuit as a bull rider and also riding horses. He loved to go hunting and fishing with Robert and Richard Littleghost. He was always working on vehicles, lawn mowers and just anything he could get his hands on around the house.
Louis lived and worked on the Spirit Lake Nation his entire life. He worked at Spirit Lake Refuse, Land Operations, Sioux Manufacturing Corporation and Dakotah Tribal Industries. He also worked several years for Glen Wallce.
Louis met the love of his life Lois Bull Bear in 1981, and they were united in marriage on May 26, 1981, in Minnewaukan, ND. Louis and Lois made their home in the St. Michael area, and he welcomed her children as his own.
Louis loved his country, his family, and his Lord. We are heartbroken as we say goodbye to our loving husband, brother, uncle, fellow soldier, and dear friend. Rest in God’s peace.
Louis is survived by his loving wife Lois; sisters Inez Chaske and Aurelia Chaske; brother Kenny Chaske; daughter Janice WalkingEagle; favorite grandson Austin Dean Longie; several dear nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was reunited with his parents Anthony and Rita; brother Timothy Chaske; sisters Barbara Chaske; son Kevin WalkingEagle; uncle Edward Mathion; aunts Marie Mathion and Cecelia Mathion; grandparents James and Emma Mathion and Ida PoorBear; brother-in-law Gerald Longie Sr.; good friends Robert Littleghost Sr., Lawrence “Josh” Littleghost and Duane Guy.
