Marcee Ruth Nyhus Mertens completed life here on earth and joined our Father in Heaven on May 14, 2018. Marcee’s love for our Lord filled her with strength and served as an example of God’s gifts of faith and hope.
Marcee was born on May 21, 1953 to Les and Rose Marie Nyhus. She graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1971 and married her high school sweetheart Jim Mertens in 1974. Marcee went on to earn a bachelors and then Masters in Education. Marcee was a dedicated and lauded educator, touching the lives of so many over a long and rewarding career. Marcee’s success as an educator came from her core belief that everyone can learn, and that the role of the teacher is to find the right methods to reach each learner. Marcee was inducted into the DLPS Hall of Fame in 2014.
Marcee’s most treasured role in life was that of Wife, Mother and Grammy. Marcee was loved by so many: husband Jim, children Karsi (Duane), Cody, and KelSie, grandchildren Griffin and Athena, parents Rose Marie and Les, sisters Leanne (Morris) and Kara (Jerry), extended family, and countless friends.
Marcee’s optimism and resilience inspired many. Her smile and contagious giggle made so many situations better. Despite a complex health history, she found ways to keep life fun, traveling, gathering with friends and family, crafting, and creating.
Marcee is preceded in death by her father Les, mother-in law Bernice, father-in law John, and brother-in-law Morris.
Funeral Services for Marcee will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Revered Jim Paulson officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
Gathering of family and friends will be on Friday, May 18th at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a time of sharing, remembrance and prayer at 7:00 p.m.
