Phyllis Y. Kavlie

Phyllis Y. Kavlie, 87 of Rolette ND passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the Rolette Community Care Center with family at her side.

Phyllis Yvonne, daughter of Henry and Elna (Pederson) Schroeder was born on August 10, 1933 at the family homestead at Souris ND. She grew up there and graduated from the Souris High School.  She continued her education at the Bottineau School of Forestry. 

Phyllis was united in marriage to Duane Kavlie on September 14, 1952 at the Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church in Rolette. They lived for a short time in Souris, but eventually made Rolette their home for the rest of their lives. 

Phyllis and Duane were the owners and operators of Kavli’s Truck Line for many years, with Phyllis being the bookkeeper for the business along with many other responsibilities. But being a devoted wife, loving, caring and nurturing mother to her 6 daughters and later to her two grandsons after their mother Dawn died, was her life’s work. 

Phyllis was always very active in her church and community. In their younger years, Phyllis and Duane enjoyed curling and in retirement years, they loved gardening together.  Phyllis always had a well-tended garden and all that came with it; seeding, weeding, picking and processing all the produce of the garden.  She was a talented seamstress and also cook. The wonderful smell of baking and cooking family meals and family favorites was always present in her home. 

Phyllis’s home was always open to family and friends. She loved her Lord and Savior and shared that faith with others in her gentle manner of unconditional love, prayer and Scripture.  In her 87 years, Phyllis had many adventures, happy times, heartaches and blessings and was ready to meet her Lord, face to face.

Phyllis will be so very missed by her loving family including her daughters Holly (Paul) Foss, Rolette, Jewel (Dale) Honsey also of Rolette, Danise (Ted) Gottbreht, Belcourt ND and Roselle (Duane) Tooke, Dunseith ND; son-in-law Rich Roach, Rolette; 13 grandchildren Brock (Dawn) Kavlie-Jamaar Benton, Jacob (Erin) Benton-Jason (Suzanne) Roach, LaDawn Carmen-Kris (Kristi) Honsey, Kelli (Dan) Swenson, Nichole (Christopher) Davis-Andrea (Jordin) Birst, Heather Pitsiladis, Evrett Gottbreht-Tanner (Jessica) Tooke and Ian Tooke; 27 great grandchildren; sisters Ethel Kavlie, Minot ND, Mary Ann (Norman) Otteson, Salem OR and Yona Ash, Las Vegas NV; in-laws Curtis (Elaine) Kavlie, Pickerel Lake MN and Jerry (Arlys) Kavlie, Great Falls MT and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Duane in February of 2012, daughters Dawn Benton-Maturin and Pauline Roach, sister Beulah Schroeder and brothers-in-law Hampton Kavlie and James Ash.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be a family memorial service at the Rolette Cemetery on Saturday, September 12, 2020. The family thanks you so much for your many acts of kindness and prayerful support these past months.  God Bless You All.
