R. Glenn Salisbury

Richard Glenn Salisbury, 87 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Eventide Heartland Care Center with loving family at his side.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake. Funeral Services for Glenn will be on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Lori Pankratz officiating.

Richard Glenn, son of Lewis and Hazel (Volden) Salisbury was born on June 11, 1937, at Devils Lake. He was raised in Minnewaukan, North Dakota and graduated from Minnewaukan High School with the class of 1955. He continued his education at Minot State Teacher’s College.

Glenn taught for one year at a one-room school near Rugby. He earned his Associates of Arts Degree from Lake Region Junior College in 1959. In 1957, Glenn had worked part-time for the North Dakota Department of Transportation but decided to make it his career, working his way upward to District Materials Engineer, retiring in 2003. But retirement was not for Glenn so within 2 weeks he began employment with KLJ to work on all the raised roads in the Lake Region area.

Glenn married his precious sweetheart Ardys “Ardy” Treon on September 3, 1960, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Oberon ND. They lived for a brief time in New Rockford and then in Minnewaukan. In October of 1963 they moved to Devils Lake where they lived, worked, and raised their children, Dawn born in 1961, and Dana born in 1966.

Papa Glenn and Grandma Ardy were Day Care providers to several kiddos at various times: Brady, Nathan and Krissy Larson, Mara and Megan LaMotte, Ellie and John Rutten, Alyssa and Joey Hornstein and Jessica Fairley. After their second and third grandchildren were born, they spent many days in Thompson getting to know them.

Family meant the world to Glenn and Ardy. They followed all the activities and sporting events their children participated in and of course all the events of their grandchildren. They even made it a priority to follow the grandkids through high school and college activities.

Glenn was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he taught confirmation classes. He was a very active member of the Devils Lake Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #2614 since 1968, holding all the offices at the local and state levels and was the North Dakota and South Dakota State President in 1983-84. Glenn was inducted into the North Dakota Aerie Hall of Fame in 1997. When the Devils Lake Aerie closed, Glenn transferred his membership to New Rockford.

Glenn thoroughly enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with friends and family. He and Ardy also made so many new friends since 2005 when they began summer camping at East Bay Campground. Being a NASCAR and football fan, led to Glenn instigating many friendly betting pools.

The Lake Region area and beyond are so thankful to Glenn and several others for the founding of the annual fishing tournament which started in 1984 and has only gotten bigger and better from the wonderful foundation begun by Glenn.

It was always an interesting trip when you went with Glenn. He knew at least one person in every town in North Dakota, every highway, and the location of every mile marker.

We say goodbye for now, to a devoted dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. May you rest in peace in the arms of your Lord and at Mom’s side.

Glenn is survived by his daughter Dawn Stoe and son Dana (Marlene) Salisbury all of Devils Lake; grandchildren Doug (Mandy) Iverson, Grand Forks, Rebekah (Bridger) Urban, Devils Lake, Riley Stoe also of Devils Lake; great granddaughter Laramie Layne Urban; son-in-law Tom Stoe, Devils Lake; in-laws Eloise Lucht, New Rockford ND, Ivy Johnson, Spring Lake Park, MN, Ann Wheeler, Kenai, Alaska, Delano (Joan) Treon, Culver, Oregon and Elna Treon, Aloha, Oregon; many nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ardy on April 9, 2024, parents Hazel and Lewis, siblings Evonne Choukalos, David Salisbury and John Salisbury, father-in-law and mother-in-law Jack and Thea Treon and many other precious family members.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake.
