Raymond C. Smith, 72 of Devils Lake formerly of Belcourt, ND left for the Spirit World on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 in Devils Lake.

The Wake for Raymond will be held on Friday, September 13, 2019 at the Tekakwitha Center, St. Michael, ND beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to St. Michael will leave on Friday at 4:00 p.m. from City Plaza. 

Funeral Services for Raymond will be on Saturday, September 14th at 10:00 a.m. also at the Tekakwitha Center with Father Paul Schuster officiating.  Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Spirit Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547. 

Raymond Clarence Smith was born on March 9, 1947 at Belcourt, ND the son of Wallace and Rita (Schroeder) Smith. He grew up in Belcourt, ND and entered the United States Army on April 29, 1966 and served his country during the Vietnam War.  He was honorably discharged from the Army on April 28, 1969 with the rank of Specialist 4.  He then entered the United States Marine Corp on August 23, 1972 and proudly served his country until March 19, 1975 when he was honorably discharged. 

Raymond returned to North Dakota and lived most of his life in Devils Lake. Raymond was united in marriage to Camilla Peltier on December 3, 2002. 

Raymond worked various jobs including DTI (Dakotah Tribal Industries) and Sioux Manufacturing in Fort Totten and also the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort.   Raymond loved working at the Casino and Resort.  He worked in the Housekeeping Department and also the Food and Beverage Department.  He enjoyed meeting new people and working with his co-workers. 

Raymond gave everybody lots of love and also respected everybody. Raymond was a well-known person and touched the hearts of many people. 

Raymond is survived by his wife of 17 years Camilla Smith; seven children Mary (Michael) McDonald, Ginger (Michael) Rue, Monica Gonzales, Owen (Denise) McKay, Reign (Misty) Roofwalker, Tim McKay and Sheila (Paul) Robertson all of Devils Lake; forty-nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; brother Bennett Smith of California; sister Shirley Rossenberg, Grand Forks, ND; sisters-in-law Brenda Peltier and Lila Vannett both of Devils Lake; brother-in-law Pat Peltier also of Devils Lake; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Rota; brother Jerry Schroeder; sister Doris Smith; nephew Mason McKay and several beloved aunts and uncles.

Active Pallbearers will be Trevon Alexander, Tim McKay, Charlie Kiviniemi, Reign Roofwalker, Owen McKay and Dawnti McKay.

Honorary Bearers are Michael Ray and Ginger Rue and kids, Earl Landers, Lila Vannett, Tim McKay III, Sheila Robertson, Lonnie Charboneau, Delbert Herald, Michael Rossenberg, Dick Rossenberg, Raymond’s forty-nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. If we forgot anybody it was not intentional. Please forgive us as we do our best at this very difficult time. 

All Drum Groups and Singers are welcome to share their songs in memory of Raymond.
