Richard Berg, 82 of Devils Lake passed away on Friday evening, August 7, 2020 at his home in the loving care of his family and Altru Hospice.

Richard Elmer Berg was born on May 30,1938 on a farm in Clyde, North Dakota.  Son of Math and Catherine (Zimmer) Berg.  Richard graduated in 1956 from Munich High School.  After graduation Richard moved to Devils Lake with his parents where he worked for Goodman Electric.  Richard attended Lake Region College.

He married the love of his life Rosalie Ebertz on January 28, 1958 in Devils Lake.  Richard and Rosalie recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. 

Richard passed the civil service exam and began employment for the U.S. Postal Service in 1960.  He began as a clerk and was appointed sectional center postmaster in 1972.  His accomplishments as 583 Postmaster include; jurisdiction for 69 associate offices, served on a schedule and survey team for large mail processing centers in the upper Midwest, had the honor of a first day issue of a U.S. stamp, and oversaw the construction of the current Devils Lake Post Office.  Richard was a 25-year member of the National Association of Postmasters hosting two state conventions in Devils Lake.

Richard was a proud member of the Devils Lake community.  He was co-chairman for the construction of the present Joe Roller complex.  He served as a city commissioner and was the building committee chairman for the current fire department in 1987.  Richard was President of the St. Joseph’s Parish Church Council, Knights of Columbus member, and was a Eucharist Minister.  Richard served as President of the International Rotary Club in 1980 and 1981 and was a member of the Elk’s Club.

Richard was an avid hunter, fisherman, woodworker, and golfer which continue to be enjoyed by his children and grandchildren. 

Being a proud family man; his greatest accomplishment was his 7 children, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren which provided Richard and Rosalie many years of joy.

Richard is survived by wife Rosalie, children Paul (Bonnie) Carrington, ND, Catherine Mandan ND, Nancy (Gary) Trottier. Devils Lake, Todd (Patty) Gilbert AZ, Jason (Dana) Fort Collins CO, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by parents Math and Catherine; brothers -George, Harold, Omar, and Herman; sisters - Emma, Ida, Lenore, Helen, Hilda, Mary Ann, Inez, and Margaret; daughters Laura Marie and Kimberly Dawn.
