Richard D. Courtney

Richard D. Courtney, 88 of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Fillmore, ND passed away peacefully on Friday, July 20, 2018 after a brief battle with cancer.

Richard was born March 3, 1930, the son of James and Mabel (Pottenger) Courtney. He was raised on a farm near Fillmore, ND.  After graduating high school he began his life long career with the Soo Line Railroad.  His career took him down many roads in North Dakota and South Dakota.  Richard retired from the Soo Line in 1992. 

He spent his retirement years bowling in the winters and golfing in the summers. He was still able to golf 5 days a week in 2017 at the age of 87. 

Richard married Janice Golberg in 1950. Together they had 2 children, Craig (Mary) Courtney of Carver, MN and Candice (Dwane) Getzlaff, Lake Metigoshe.  This marriage later ended in divorce. 

Richard is survived by his two children; five grandchildren Lindsey (Adam) Danielson of Stillwater, MN, Gina (Andrew) DePhillips of Urbandale, IA, Ryan (Allison) Getzlaff and Riley (Desiree) Getzlaff of Bottnieau, and Tyler (Sarah) Getzlaff of Bismarck, ND, along with eleven great grandchildren Olivia, Caleb, Dylan, Lucas, Austin, Tyson, Colton, Peyton, Caiden, Carter and Piper.

Richard was preceded in death by his parent and infant brother.

Funeral Services for Richard will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 1:00 pm with Reverend Lori Broschat officiating.   Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
