Roger Dale Thumb

Roger Dale Thumb, “The Cowboy” 73 of Oberon, ND passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2019 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Roger Dale Thumb was born on July 16, 1946 to Martin and Florence (Ironheart) Thumb at Fort Totten, ND. He was educated at a country school in Benson County.  At a very young age he started working at a ranch in Montana. 

Roger spent most of his life working for ranchers in the South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming areas. While in North Dakota he had various jobs.  He was in Grand Forks and did snow removal. 

Roger became a well-known horse rider and participated in rodeos. Roger was a storyteller and spent many days entertaining his nephews and nieces.  A big laugh was always contagious. 

Roger is survived by his 3 children Travis, Nancy and Dallas; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brothers Wilbur (Delimma) McKay, Minneapolis, MN, Darrel (Grace) Thumb, Belt, Montana, Gary Thumb Sr., Warwick, ND, Edward (Nan) Thumb, Oberon, ND, Elvis Thumb Sr. also of Oberon; sisters Inez (Jerry) Green, Oberon, Joyce Affeldt, Sheyenne, ND, Idell Thumb, Fargo, ND and Yvonne Thumb, Oberon; brother-in-law Paul Stensland, Oberon; special friend Wanda Hering, Belle Fourche, South Dakota and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Florence, brothers LaVern McKay and Merle Thumb; special sister Loretta Stensland, 2 grandchildren Travis L DuBois Jr. and Destiny J. Shaw-DuBois and special nephew Shane Gardell.

“The Cowboy Rides Away”

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Friday, December 6, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services for Roger will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Tokio Wellness Center in Tokio with Reverend Larry Thiele officiating.  Burial will be in the Bdecan Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Tokio. 

Casket Bearers for Roger will be Elvis Thumb Jr., Bailey Thumb, Levi Thumb, Zach Thumb, Gabriel Thumb, Gary Thumb Jr. and Stacy Thumb.
