Rose Marie Nyhus

Rose Marie Nyhus, 91 of Devils Lake, ND passed away on Thursday morning, November 21, 2019 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral Services for Rose Marie will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jim Paulson, Pastor of St. Olaf Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery.

Rose Marie Brandt was born on July 24, 1928 at Omemee, ND, the daughter of Edwin and Mary (Rockvoy) Brandt. The family moved to Rugby and Rose Marie graduated from Rugby High School with the class of 1946.  She continued her education at the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Rugby and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1949.

Rose Marie was united in marriage to Lester R. Nyhus on August 13, 1950 in Rugby. Since Lester was a teacher and administrator the family moved to several different school districts including Upham, Cando and Devils Lake.  Along with being a devoted wife and mother, Rose Marie always worked as a dedicated and caring health care professional.  She was employed with the Rugby, Upham and Cando Hospitals and after moving to Devils Lake, she worked for a time at the Lake Region Lutheran Home and Mercy Hospital.  She retired in 1989 from the North Dakota Department of Health.  She also did private duty nursing for several years. For over 20 years, she and Lester enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida.

She was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, WELCA, was involved in many community activities and was an avid reader.

Family was the most important part of Rose Marie’s life. She loved with all her heart and loved unconditionally.  

Rose Marie is survived by her loving family. Her daughters and sons-in-law Leanne Vigen, Adams, ND, Kara and Jerry Johnson, Devils Lake and Jim Mertens also of Devils Lake; Grandchildren Jennifer (Vigen) and Marty Iverson, Kyra (Vigen) and Perry Erovick, Angela (Vigen) and Jake Borden, Karsi (Mertens) and Duane Grego, Cody Mertens, KelSie Mertens, Jeremiah and Kimberly Johnson; great grandchildren Zachary Iverson, MacKenzie Iverson, Carter Iverson, Alexis Iverson, Jacob Erovick, Jordan Erovick, Jameson Erovick, Chase Borden, Jaxon Borden, Hunter Borden, Griffin Grego, Athena Grego and Soren Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester on June 13, 2009, daughter Marcee Mertens, son-in-law Morris Vigen, brother Calvin Brandt and sister Beverly Bell.
