Rose Ann WhiteTail Sherman, “Zitkana Sa Win” (Red Bird Woman) Our beloved mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend, journeyed home to the Spiritual World on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Trinity Medical Center in Minot, ND with her loving family and sisters by her side due to health complications at the age of 49.
Visitation for Rose will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. from City Plaza.
Mass of Christian Burial for Rose will be on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Charles Leute OP celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Jerome’s Cemetery in the spring.
Rose was born December 8, 1970 at Mercy Hosptial, Devils Lake, ND the daughter of Dorothy (Dunn) and Byron WhiteTail. Rose (the baby sister) was the youngest child of 12 siblings.
Rose was a Dakota and Arikara Ree woman. An enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Tribe. Rose was brought up in life to have respect for her elders, family and community. She was taught it was disrespectful to call anyone she was related to by their first name without saying, how she was related to them. Rose was taught and was still learning her traditional ways of both Arikara and Dakota language and culture.
Rose grew up on the Spirit Lake Reservation. She attended grade school at Fort Totten and Flandreau Indian School at Flandreau, South Dakota and graduated from Four Winds High School.
Rose was a floorwalker at the Dakota Bingo Palace and held several positions at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort including change runner, security guard, shuttle driver and other jobs. She also had worked as a flagger for the Ames Road Construction Company, CNA at Spirit Lake Tribe/CHR Program and was a QSP for the state of North Dakota.
Rose was united in marriage to David Sherman on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2001 and they made their home in Fort Totten where they raised their family.
Rose traveled all over to the pow-wows, watched her husband play horseshoe at tournaments and she was also very good at horsehoe.
Rose had a big caring heart. She took care of her mother Dorothy, sister Donna and her father-in-law Raymond. Rose loved to laugh, joke around and tease everyone. Rose always showed her family that she loved them and always gave them hugs whenever she saw them.
Rose’s loving family include her husband David Sherman Jr.; sons David Sherman Jr., Boss Sherman, Dana Lee Lohnes; daughter Shana Marie Lohnes; grandchildren Kayla Marie Anna Lohnes, Avery Michael Lohnes, Emeline Crystal Skye Lohnes, Xander Allen Blue Lohnes; sisters Catalina (Terrence) Herman, Cora Ann Whiteman, Donna Rae WhiteTail; sisters-in-law Leona Azure and Marcella GreyBull; brothers John Allen Whiteman Sr., Quentin Bruce Whiteman Jr., Milo Blaine WhiteTail; brother-in-law Reuben Williams; uncles and aunts Kenneth and Florestine Dunn, Frank Reed, John and Mona Chaske, Eldon Reed, Winfield Chaske, Elton Reed, Gerald Reed, Evelyn Ross, Twyla Reed, Sheila Thompson, Sally Cavanaugh, Yvonne Thompson, Yvonne Taylor, Bonnie LeftBear, Millicent Little, Violet Smith; grandmothers Pauline Myrick, Elaine Robertson, Elizabeth Littleghost, Mona LeftBear, Helena Littleghost; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, maternal grandparents Josephine (Ross) and Martin Dunn, paternal grandparents Mamie (Reed) and David WhiteTail, brothers Gerald Whiteman and Carmen Reed, sisters Felicia “Tiny” Reed, Claudette Rose WhiteTail Williams, Emrolyn Kae WhiteTail and Dana Lee WhiteTail, nieces Jamaica Rae WhiteTail, DaNeille Crystal Lawrence, Jamie Rose Jetty and Delora WhiteTail, nephews Lenny Quentin RedTomahawk, Darrick John RedTomahawk,and Byron Wayne WhiteTail Williams, aunts Mary Angeline dunn Alberts, Vivian Dunn SporttedHorse, Emma Dunn GoodThunder, Caroline Dunn Whiteman, Florence Rita Dunn WhiteTail, Mary Rose WhiteTail Tenney and Marion Marrsett and uncles Fayaronald WhiteTail Sr., David, Ronald and Sanford WhiteTail.
