Russell H. Hopkins

Russell Howard Hopkins, 92 of Devils Lake ND passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake. 

Russell Howard Hopkins was born on October 4, 1929 in Devils Lake ND, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Prouty) Hopkins.  The family made their home near Tokio ND where he attended grade school.

At age 15, Russell attended school in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. He soon returned to Tokio, where he purchased 320 acres of wooded land near Woodlake and started raising cattle and horses. 

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He enlisted on December 29, 1950 at Fargo ND and was honorably discharged on July 31, 1954 with the rank of Airman 1^st Class.    

Russell met Delores Elaine Soggie at a rodeo and they were united in marriage on November 20, 1954. They were the proud parents of their son Tim Hopkins. Russell and Tim were always good friends and were frequent companions when out and about.

After marriage, the Tokio property was sold and Russell and Delores moved to Devils Lake.

Russell held various jobs including Monteith Meats, Lake Redi-Mix, Lake Lumber, Cox Bakery, Janitorial Services and Shoppers Warehouse Service. 

Russell liked nature and people and quiet time.  He had a quiet witty sense of humor.  He will be missed by all that knew him. 

Russell is survived by his precious son Tim and several nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Delores on April 14, 2022, brother Melvin Hopkins and sister Lorraine Ewertz.

A Graveside Service will be held for Russell and Delores on Monday, May 23, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Devils Lake Cemetery with Reverend Jim Paulson officiating.  Military Honors will be accorded for Russell.  In case of rain, services will be at the Gilbertson Funeral Home with burial to follow.
