Our beloved Mother, Daughter, Niece, Aunt, Cousin and Friend, Shannon Rae Buckles, “Hanpikceka Wakan Win” (Sacred Moccasin Women) Her moccasins are sacred as she begins her journey to the Star Nation on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks at the age of 48.
Shannon Raye Buckles began her earthly journey on October 27, 1976 in Devils Lake ND the daughter of Raymond and Maxine (Waanatan) Buckles. She began her education at Little Hoop Head Start and later attended school in Pierre, South Dakota.
Shannon called the Spirit Lake Nation home her entire life. She worked for the Summer Youth Program a job she loved. She loved to babysit for her nieces and nephews and helped to raise several of them. Her family meant everything to her and she would do anything she could to help them. Unfortunately, Shannon has struggled with health issues for several years and was most recently a resident at Eventide Heartland Care Center.
He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and found advanced coloring books as a wonderful pastime.
Shannon’s loving family include her children Billy, Joanna and Baby Chad Buckles; parents Raymond and Maxine Buckles; brothers Michael, Wayne, Jeremy and Mitchell (Nicole Thomas) Buckles; sister Jessica Buckles; favorite aunts Michelle “Reiger” Knutson, Lila Anderson, Carmen Abrahamson, Marcella Knutson, Kim Knutson and Marilyn Knutson; uncles Frank Buckles, Arlan Chapman, Melvin “John” Knutson, Roger Charboneau, Ritchie Charboneau, Dwayne Charboneau, Kenny Greywater, and Emery Greywater; great grandma Helena Littleghost; nieces Sharissa, Shylene, Michaela, Michalene, Haley, Phoenix, Grace, Chadley, and Lillian Buckles; great nieces Ellionna, Laileeyah, and Kaulanie Buckles; nephews Baby Michael Buckles, Mikah Buckles, Saunders Jackson, Parrish Jackson, Samuel Jackson, Mitchell Buckles, Noah Buckles, Nicholas Buckles, Jeremy Buckles Jr., Xavier Buckles, Riley Buckles: great nephews Jae-Angelo Griffin, Zane Jackson, Elijah (Runs Through) Buckles, Kalem Hoetle, Riley Buckles Jr.; many cousins, friends, all my family. If we forgot to name you, know it was not intentional. Shannon’s heart was so full of love for you all.
Shannon was preceded in death by her brother Merlyn “Chad” Buckles, nephew Starson Buckles, niece Shyra Mae Buckles, maternal grandparents Francis and Joanne Marie Waanatan, paternal grandparents Raymond Buckles Sr., Mary Jo Buckles Greywater, Andrew Greywater; special friend William “Boy” Longie III.
Pallbearers will be: Michael Buckles, Jeremy Buckles, Mitchell Buckles, Samuel Buckles, D. J. Charboneau, Merlyn Knutson III, Donavan Robertson, and Mikah Buckles.

The Wake for Shannon will be on Monday, December 9, 2024 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Fort Totten Wellness Center with a time of prayer and remembrance at 7:00 p.m. The procession will leave on Monday at 4:00 p.m. from the City Plaza.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, December 10th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fort Totten at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Steven Meyer celebrating the Mass. Final Review will begin at the Wellness Center at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. All Drum Groups and Singers are welcome to share their songs in memory of Shannon.
