Steven J. Stone, (Mahpiya Wanbdi) (Eagle Cloud)51 of Fort Totten, ND passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND with his loving family at his side.
Steven James, one of twin boys born on October 11, 1967 to Francis Brown and Cynthia Stone in St. Paul, Minnesota where he lived with his family. When Steven’s mother passed away, he moved to Crow Hill and attended Four Winds School. He also received further education and training at the Job Corp in Utah.
Steven returned to the Spirit Lake Nation and worked at various jobs in the area. He also owned and operated Stone Janitorial, Cleaning and Maintenance for several years. Most recently he worked as a consultant for the Tribal Court and at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort until health problems forced him to retire.
Steven was a “Packer Backer” and watched football throughout the year from pre-season games to Super Bowl. He especially loved to visit with family and friends and was always able to make new friends with his kindness, sense of humor and good conversation. He was never idle-he always was “busy” doing something. Steven had a kind heart and was always willing to help anyone that asked him.
Steven’s life on this earth was short, but the memories are many and in our hearts forever.
Steven is survived by his loving family. His Dad, Francis Brown, Fort Totten; brothers and sisters Mike (Darlene) Stone, Grand Forks, Kelly (Clarice) Stone, Fort Totten, twin brother Charles (Violet) Stone, Sioux Falls, SD, Lynette Stone, St. Paul. MN, Collette (Jason Thompson) Brown, Warwick and Jason Brown, Fort Totten; nieces and nephews Summer, Holly, Michelle, Michael Jr. and Jonathan-Aylssa and Cynthia-Charles Jr. and Steven-Donovan, Jordon and Nino-Wyatt, Tayia and Neela-Jeremiah and Aiden; many aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Cynthia; brother Eric Stone, a niece, along with many other relatives and friends.
Casket Bearers for Steven will be Charles Stone Jr., Steven Stone, Wyatt Jetty, Michael Stone Jr., Jonathan Stone, Eric Martin and Loren “Tubby” Greybear Jr.
Honorary Bearers are Myra Pearson and family, Susie Fox and family, Fawn Littlewind and family, Tricia Adams and family, Loren Greybear Sr. and family, Tina Martin and John Waanatan, Joyce SpottedBird and family, Reno and Reco Littleghost, Melvin Greybear Jr., Myron Greybear, Greg Mindt, Alton Nestell and family, Benny, Jerry and Mark Mudgett, Darren Yankton, Cindy Azure and brothers, Dolly and Jeannie Cavanaugh, Lorraine Greybear, Bentley Greybear family, Tracy Charboneau and family, Shelly Luger, Mary and Ron Lohnes, Winfield Chaske Sr. family, Spirit Lake Tribal Court Co-Workers. All the Tribal Programs that helped Steve and our family during this difficult time. Please forgive us if we forgot anyone.
The Wake for Steven will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Fort Totten Recreation Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:00 p.m. on Friday from the City Plaza.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, February 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the Fort Totten Recreation Center with Father Charles Leute, OP officiating. Burial will be in St. Jerome’s Cemetery, rural Fort Totten in the spring.
