Sylvia A. Conlon, 99 of Devils Lake formerly of Crary, ND passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Eventide Heartland Care Center in the loving care of her family. 

Funeral Services for Sylvia will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Tom Westcott officiating.  Sylvia will be laid to rest beside her beloved Dick at the Crary Community Cemetery. 

Visitation will be held at Eventide Heartland Care Chapel, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and will continue on Thursday at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.  There will be a time of remembrance at 3:30 p.m. at the Eventide Heartland Care Chapel. 

Sylvia Aldora was born on March 11, 1919, the daughter of C.A. “Tony” and Sophia (Thompson) Bye, at rural Crary, ND, where she grew up and attended school.  She attended the New York Hairdressing Academy in Fargo, ND working at Oakes, Valley City, Grafton and Devils Lake.  

On January 12, 1942, Sylvia was united in marriage to Richard “Dick” M. Conlon at East Grand Forks, Minnesota. They made their home in Grand Forks until Dick entered the US Army and he was stationed at Fort Warren in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  While living there, Sylvia worked at the Holland Pastry Shop and also in the Post laundry in the Hospital.  In 1946 they moved to Crary, were owners and operators of Conlon’s Corner and Sylvia operated the “Lunch Room” for the next 18 years.

They moved to Devils Lake and Sylvia worked at Carlson Bakery for a time, Lake Region Nursing Home for 21 years and then as the night supervisor at the North Dakota School for the Deaf.  Dick died on November 30, 1996. 

Sylvia was a devoted wife and loving aunt, faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and dear friend to many.  

Sylvia is survived by her sister Gladys Brand, Minot, ND; nephew Jerry (Sue) Estenson and niece Judy (Milton) Grimm whom she and Richard helped raise; nieces Toby (Dennis) Magsam, Carol (Jim) Futch, Donna (Mike) Ohndracek, Jan (Jeff) Gustafson, Mikal Bye,  and JuLee Brand; nephews Paul Brand, Rick Brand, Randy (Crissy) Brand, Michael Stautz, Robert (Marsha) Stautz, Darrell Bye, Rick (Carol) Bye, Bill (Tracy) Bye and Chuck (Sue) Bye; sister-in-law Marge Bye of Devils Lake and other family members that were special to Sylvia; special friends Dolores Stenseth, Ruby Brintnell, Sharon Wolf, Ruth Elsberry, Astrid Ongstad and Eileen Goldade.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard; brothers Howard (Helen) Bye and Duane Bye; sisters Margaret Partridge, Evelyn (Duane) Converse and Jen (Leo) Estenson.   

Active Casket Bearers Rick Brand, Randy Brand, Bill Bye, Rick Bye, Darrell Bye and BJ Rohr.    

Honorary Bearers will be Dr. Tom Corbett, Don Brintnell, Syl Brown, Art Rohr, Dale Dinger, Bob Borho, Dennis Goldade, Rodney Franson and all her many dear friends.  Music will be provided by Dennis Magsam and Donovan Foughty, vocalists and Jean Aardahl, pianist.

Memorials may be directed to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Altru Hospice or the Crary Community Cemetery Association.
