He was reared and educated in Devils Lake and graduated from Devils Lake Central in 1962. He entered the US Navy and proudly served his country aboard the destroyer USS Cory DD 508. He was honorably discharged on June 17, 1965 as a Gunner’s Mate. He continued in the Navy Reserve until June 17, 1968. He married Donna Bartlett in 1966. They had a son Chad in that year and in 1969 a daughter Ronda was born. Verne developed his love of the outdoors, fishing and hunting from his father and passed that love to his son Chad from a very early age and continued throughout Verne’s lifetime. In 1978 he moved to Sidney, Montana at the age of 35 and that was his home until his death. He loved Montana and its huge hunting opportunities and made many friends there. Joe and Mac to name just a couple. He loved to come back to Devils Lake to visit his mother, brother and sister and family on holidays and to visit with a great many friends he had there. He also traveled to Washington State to visit his daughter Ronda and her family. His sister Candice would babysit the dogs when he took the train out West. Verne worked for Sweetheart Bread Company until his retirement. He was a hard worker. He said “I go to work to load my truck when most people are going to bed.” Verne was a very honest man and would lend a helping hand to anyone. He had a great sense of humor and would say the darnedest things, that was pure Verne. Verne will be greatly missed by all his loving family. Verne was a big LA Dodger fan and we hope they win the World Series for their greatest fan in Heaven. Verne is survived by his son Chad Cashman, Sidney, MT, daughter Ronda (Erik) Hakso, Lake Stevens, WA and son Cliff VanBuren, Mayville, ND; sister Candice (Mike) Thomason and brother Bill Cashman all of Devils Lake; nephew Michael Thomason; grandchildren Nicole Silva, Bryton Held, Jonah, Oliver and Maggie Hakso and Cora VanBuren; great grandchildren Michael, Ely and Dillan and beloved springer spaniel Chuckie and many cousins.
