Violet M. Smith, 72 of Tokio ND passed away on Labor Day, September 7, 2020 at her home in the loving care of her family and Altru Hospice.

Violet was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1948 at Fort Totten ND, the daughter of John Thompson and Mary Jackson.  She grew up in the Tokio area, attended the old Tokio School, St. Michael’s Little Flower School and graduated from Fort Totten High School.  Violet was the Director of the Community Nourishment for the Mind and Body Food Pantry in Tokio for 21 years. 

Violet had many years with Calvin Smith Sr. and were blessed to have 36 years of marriage.  Together they raised 10 children. 

Violet had such a caring and kind heart.  Her home was always open to everyone in need.  She always made sure they were fed and had a roof over their head. 

Violet loved going to the Casino, seeing family and friends and making new friends. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, cooking and baking, always making family favorites, including “lasagna”.  She made 100’s of Star Quilts and again shared them with loved ones. 

Violet was a beautiful, loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. 

Violet’s loving family include her husband Calvin Smith Sr.; their children and grandchildren Vance Thompson Sr. and his children Walter Thompson, Vance Thompson Jr., Sage Thompson, Tesa Sherman and Mae Thompson; Aaron Thompson Sr. and his children Aaron Thompson Jr., Joseph Thompson, Mary Kristen Thompson and Dakota Thompson; Adrian Thompson who passed away in August of 2020 and his children Alisa Ann Thompson and Brittany Dae Thompson; Laurie Ann Smith who passed away in February 2017 and her children Tori Jean Longie, Dalton Beau Longie and Savannah Rose Longie; Laura Smith who passed away in November of 2018; Waylon J. Smith and his children Montoya Chanel Smith, Hallie Jowell Smith, Waylon J.R. Smith and Brec Jesse Smith; Lonnie Smith and his children Latonnie Smith, Jacoby Smith, Shirley Smith and Leigh Ann Smith; Amanda (Roger) Smith and her children Samuel Jetty, Armani Jetty and Daris Jetty; Candys Smith and her children Jourdain Smith, Naomi Ebach and Violet Ebach; Calvin “Bud” Smith Jr.; many great grandchildren; sisters Geraldine Redfox and Viola Thompson and adopted baby sister Sheila Thompson; adopted brother Duane Jackson; adopted daughter Cora Whiteman; favorite niece Corrine Brown and nieces Leola White and Cabeebs White; auntie Pauline Graywater; many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Mary and John; twin daughters Laurie and Laura Smith, son Adrian Thompson, grandson Johnathan Thompson, brother Arthur “Art” Thompson and other beloved relatives. 

A Wake and time of prayer will be held on Friday, September 11, 2020 at Violet’s home beginning at 7:00 p.m. The procession to Tokio will leave on Friday at 6:00 p.m. from City Plaza, Devils Lake.  A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Bishop Michael Cole officiating.  The procession to St. Michael’s Cemetery will leave from Violet’s home at 2:00 p.m.

 

Casket Bearers will be Monty Redfox, David Redfox, Archie Redfox III, Vance Thompson Sr., Waylon Smith Sr. and Lonnie Smith.  Honorary Bearers will be Pauline Graywater, Roger Yankton, Helena Littleghost, Libby Littleghost, Dianne Jackson, Marva Tollefson, Debbie Murphy Cavanaugh, Belinda Murphy, Little Sis Sheila Thompson, Aloysius Cloud, Alfred Thompson, Darlene Wadsworth, Edna Matheny, Bud and Renita Shaw, Derrick and Mary Jackson, Darci Delorme, Sam Cloud, Natalie Merrick, Sam Merrick, Marilyn Thompson, Amy Brown, Jayla and Kylana Guy, Holly Brown, Joel Redfox, Mariam Redfox, Myra DuBois and Catherine Howard.
