Virginia was born on December 24, 1930 on the home farm, near Maza, ND to John and Anna (Stadleberger) Elsperger.  She attended a country school at Maza and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Devils Lake in 1948.  Shortly after graduating, she went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a long distance operator.

Virginia was united in marriage to Leo M. Volk on October 24, 1953 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  They established their home on a farm East of Webster where they lived, worked and raised their family for the next 38 years.

In 1991, Virginia and Leo purchased a home in Devils Lake. Starting in 1993, Virginia worked as a co-manager of the Seconds Count Thrift Store for the next seven years.  Leo died on December 11, 2005. Virginia continued to make her home in Devils Lake.

Virginia was an active member of St. Joseph Church, the Altar Society and St. Jude’s Circle.  She faithfully gave her time to Eucharistic Adoration and the Prayer Tree, where she had 10,432 entries in her book of prayers.  She enjoyed membership in the American Legion Auxiliary and Eagles Auxiliary and served as president of each organization.

Virginia and Leo enjoyed gardening and graciously and kindly shared their abundant produce with family and friends.  Even in her last year, she insisted on having a tomato and green pepper plant in pots near her apartment. Virginia was a treasure.  She was always sharing jokes with her doctors until the end.  When asked how she was feeling, she always responded, “I’m not dancing yet”. Virginia will be greatly missed by her dear family and friends.
