  1. Duane Guy, “WaWoKiye Wic’as’a” (Helps the People) 69 of the Spirit Lake Nation, went home to his loving Creator on Thursday, January 5, 2023. 

Remembering the life of Clarence Duane Guy, of St. Michael, the Spirit Lake Nation. He was a full-blooded Spirit Lake Tribal member. He was born on January 13, 1953, the son of Robert Guy Sr. and Rose Marie Guy. In Duane’s early years was in the Tokio area with the Ramsey family. He then moved to Edmore, ND to live with his beloved foster family in Edmore. He lived in Edmore throughout his high school years, graduating from Edmore High School in 1972. He was one of the school’s top basketball players, able to shoot from the outside which would be 3 pointers now. He loved basketball and put on basketball games for the youth and played with the older men’s basketball team. He was a great fan of Four Winds and Warwick basketball teams. He also loved boxing. He loved horseback riding in earlier days and participated in the rodeo-horse circuit and won many awards. Duane was a diligent worker of farming tasks. After high school, Duane served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

Duane entered his first marriage and was Dad to 2 sons and 1 daughter. In 1978, Duane married his beloved, the love of his life Elaine Whiteshield and they made their home in the Tokio/St. Michael area. In his marriage to Elaine they added 5 children and they became a family of ten with 4 sons and 4 daughters. Duane’s family brought him great comfort, joy, and blessings. His pride and joy were his grandchildren and great grandchildren (his Amelia).

Duane serves on many tribal boards and committees. He worked in Tribal Health, Head Start Program, the Tribal Farm, Spirit Lake Elderly Program until retirement. He was a strong advocate for the elderly and the youth. He had a great love for the Spirit Lake Elders when he worked for the program. He was the voice of the elders, youth and for the people of the community.

Duane was one of a kind. He was always there to help anyone who needed help. Always ready to lend a hand. Duane was a big-hearted person, smiling, fun loving, full of laughter, full of humility and a humble man. He was a very spiritual person, who believed in prayers to God.

Dearest Duane, your life here on Mother Earth was a great one. All the laughs and happiness you have shown will be greatly missed. Now you begin your journey to the Spirit World to be with your beloved family, relatives and God. Rest In Peace.

Duane is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Elaine Guy; sons Shawn Duane (Leah) Guy, John M. Guy, Suna Guy; daughters Neva (Marty) Thumb, Lisa Guy, Michelyn Guy and Miranda Guy; many precious grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers and sisters John Guy, Janis Travis, Darla (Larry) Thiele, June, Julie, and Sheila Blueshield, Barbara Jackson, Mary Guy, Rita Guy, Cody (Sheila) Guy, Robert Guy Jr. and Michael Guy; many, many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was welcomed home to Heaven by his Lord and Savior, his parents Robert and Rose Marie Guy, sons Todd A. Yankton, Ramon DeMarce and Chris Whiteshield, Brothers and Sisters- Eddie Greywind, Alden Shane Guy, Richard DeMarce, Elaine DeMarce, Shelly Guy, Adele Guy, Terrance Guy and Debbie Guy, grandchildren Lee Lenoir Jr., Courtney Lara and Brandy Guy, Special relatives/uncles Victor Peoples and Aloysius Cloud, nephew Kevin Brown Sr., niece Savanna Greywind, Grandparents Alice Guy, Virginia Peoples and Ignatius Stone.

Music will be provided by Lake Region Singers, Rocky Littlewind Drum Group, Chris White, Milton Green and all Drum Groups and Singers are welcome to share songs in memory of Duane.

A Wake and Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2023 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Recreation Center. The will be a Prayer Service and Time of Remembrance at 7:00 p.m. The procession to St. Michael will leave on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. from City Plaza, Devils Lake. 

Funeral Services will be on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. also at the St. Michael Recreation Center with Reverend Larry Thiele and Reverend Paul Schuster officiating. Military Honors present and accorded in the spring at St. Michael's Cemetery.
